Your Essential Eight action plan, written out

Our free Essential Eight readiness checklist lists the gaps you report in about a minute and asks for nothing. This is the written version of the same conversation with the reasoning attached: which two controls to move first for a business your size, a page on each of seven gaps, and what each one actually takes. It also says plainly where the Essential Eight sits in 2026, because the Australian Signals Directorate has opened consultation on a broader Essentials series and you will be asked about it.

WHO THIS IS FOR
  • Anyone who has worked through the readiness checklist and wants to know what to do about the gaps
  • Businesses that need a defensible plan to show an insurer or a board
  • IT managers who know the gaps and need help arguing for the budget to close them
// READ IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT

A page from a real action plan

A real page from the document. The black bars mark detail removed for publication, or space left for you to fill in.

WHAT IS INSIDE
Your two to move first Chosen for effort against real risk reduction, not alphabetical order and not the order the ASD lists them
What your score actually means Read against what insurers, tenders and enterprise customers actually ask for
Where the Essential Eight sits in 2026 The Essentials consultation, what has and has not changed, and whether to wait for it
One page per gap, seven of them What Maturity Level One genuinely requires for that control, quoted rather than paraphrased
Level One separated from good advice Our recommendations are marked as recommendations, because a plan that conflates the two will not survive an assessor
Likely effort, and what complete looks like Honest about the part people underestimate, which is never the technical part
Your first 90 days Ordered so each step makes the next one easier and produces evidence you need later
What this plan does not do Stated outright, because nobody can assess your environment from a questionnaire

GAP 01 OF 07 // RESTRICT ADMINISTRATIVE PRIVILEGES
PREPARED FOR Your readiness indicator and the date assessed
WHY THIS ONE FIRST

Sequencing depends on the gaps you already have, and this business reported exposed administrative access: everyday accounts holding admin rights, and admin accounts still active for people who have left. That is dealt with before the usual order. If the account reading email is also the account that can reconfigure your tenant, a single successful phish is a full compromise rather than an inconvenience.

WHAT MATURITY LEVEL ONE REQUIRES
  • Requests for privileged access are validated when they are first requested
  • Privileged users hold a dedicated privileged account used solely for duties that require it
  • Privileged accounts are prevented from reaching the internet, email and web services, unless explicitly authorised and then limited strictly to what is needed
  • Privileged users work in separate privileged and unprivileged operating environments
A CORRECTION WORTH NOTING INFO

Annual revalidation and phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication are Maturity Level Two, not Level One. Both are sensible to do early and we recommend them below, but they are recommendations rather than Level One requirements, and a document that conflates the two will not survive an assessor.

LIKELY EFFORT

A typical small Microsoft 365 environment under 50 users, cloud-native and without complex legacy dependencies, runs to roughly one to three consulting days plus a pilot and communication period. The part people underestimate is not technical. Two or three people will need a second account and will find that irritating for about a week.

WHAT COMPLETE LOOKS LIKE

A dated export of every privileged role assignment, including service, vendor and break-glass accounts, reconciled against a list of who should hold them. The policy blocking mail and web access for those roles, exported as applied rather than as written. A named owner for each exception, with a compensating control and a review date.
